Agriculture & Food: Animal Agriculture Raising animals -- poultry, hogs, horses, beef and dairy cattle, fish and more -- has become the most valuable segment of North Carolina agriculture. Today, animal agriculture accounts for about 60 percent of the state's total farm cash receipts. North Carolina Cooperative Extension helps growers use the latest research to improve profits and manage animal waste in environmentally sound ways. FAMACHA TRAINING - With the FAMACHA© system for controlling Haemonchus contortus (barber pole worm), you identify worm-infested animals by evaluating the color of the mucus membranes around the eye. Only worm-infested animals are treated, thereby reducing the number of dewormer treatments given while also maintaining good overall parasite control. This system significantly slows the development of resistance to dewormers, which is becoming an extremely important concern in small ruminant production. This training will be held Tuesday, April 21 from 5PM until 8 PM at the Cleveland County Extension Center, located at 130 S. Post Road in Shelby. Extension meat goat specialist, Dr. Jean-Marie Luginbuhl will conduct the training.
