iFEEDER Updates

iFEEDER animal food consumption report

The Institute for Feed Education and Research’s latest animal food consumption report is here!

It’s no secret that animal food is essential for livestock and poultry production and our domestic pets at home. iFeeder has published their 2019 study for feed production based on over 5,800 manufacturing facilities in the U.S. This study is an update of the 2016 report.

Overall, North Carolina was in the top five feed-producing states, with 16.3 million tons of feed consumed in 2019. Corn was the top crop in the U.S, making up more than half of the total feed consumed.

The impacts of COVID-19 on feed consumption are still to be determined, but the report also contains information about COVID-19 Projections for Total Feed Consumption in 2025.

Read more about the report from AFIA.

iFEEDER Member Webinar

iFEEDER will be hosting a member webinar (Animal Feed Consumption and COVID-19 Impact Analysis) to provide a high-level overview of the data and answer any questions you may have. For more information, contact Rob Cooper, iFEEDER’s executive director.

First Application for Hemp as Feed Ingredient Submitted

Although hemp and CBD products are not yet approved for use in animal food, the Hemp Feed Coalition has submitted the first ingredient application in the U.S. for hemp to be federally approved as a feed ingredient. The application focuses on the ingredient in feed for laying hens.

This is the first step in getting these ingredients approved for use in other feeds as well.

Read more from New West Genetics.

Recalls

It’s important for consumers and producers to be aware of recent recalls, especially recalls that involve a particular ingredient, product or feed used or produced by a facility.

Being aware of new and evolving hazards is an important component for Preventive Controls Qualified Individuals or others who are tasked with creating and implementing a food safety plan for Food Safety Modernization Act (FSMA) compliance.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) provides a list of current and past recalls on their Recalls, Market Withdrawals, & Safety Alerts page. You can filter the recalls by product type, selecting Animal & Veterinary to see animal food recalls.
