Description:

Livestock owners have long battled fly problems on area farms and ranches. The past couple of years have been worse with fly populations increasing. Flies become resistant to various insecticides used in sprays, rub-ons and ear tags. Another major problem is the spread of pinkeye from animal to animal by flies. Cold weather alleviates the problem temporarily. However, the 2016 fly season will soon be approaching and livestock owners need to be prepared.

Cherokee and Clay County Extension is offering this workshop to present the latest methods concerning this problem. The first part of the presentation will be held inside to discuss the issue with flies and the damage they can cause to a livestock operation and management strategies to implement on local farms. The second part of workshop will be outdoors, weather permitting, with a fence building demo, discussion on pasture management, and the role of rotational grazing in regards to fly control.

The workshop will be held on December 4th starting 10:00am at the Clay County Extension Center. The physical address is 36 Davis Loop Hayesville NC, and the program will last until 2:00pm. To register for the workshop, please contact the Clay County Extension Office at 389-6305. Lunch will be provided and there is no cost for the program.
