Become a Master Gardener Volunteer!

Interested in becoming part of a volunteer program that is dedicated to promoting research-based, sustainable gardening?  Since 1979, the NC State Extension Master Gardener℠ program has recruited, trained, and engaged people to serve as volunteer educators.  Cleveland County has been involved for over 10 years! Now there are over 3,500 volunteers in 83 counties across the state.

Cleveland County will offer its next EMG Volunteer course, beginning August 10, 2023 and ending Nov 2, 2023.  The hybrid course utilizes the award winning Extension Gardener Handbook.  Students will complete assignments on-line, while enjoying hands-on practical classes, in person, on Thursdays from 4:30pm-6:00pm.  Course fee is $125 and must be received by February August 4th.

Students will be interviewed and selected for the course by the County Extension Agent.  Class is limited to 25 persons.  Once accepted in to the course and payment received, students will be given access to the on-line platform.

Upon completion of the course, Interns begin obtaining the required 40 Volunteer hours for year one.  Subsequent year required minimums are 20 Volunteer Hours and 10 Continuing Education Hours.  Details will be discussed during orientation.

Location: N.C. Cooperative Extension Auditorium 130 S. Post Rd Shelby, NC 28152
