Homes for the Holidays Under new management, Cleveland County Animal Services (CCAS) is seeking to increase adoptions of dogs being housed in the local animal shelter. Cleveland County 4-H members wanted to help by showcasing animals to the public in ways that make them more appealing, selecting “Homes for the Holidays” as their 2023 community service project.

Thirteen (13) youth visited the animal shelter on December 9 to learn about the impact of animal rescue efforts in the local community and how CCAS cares for the many unwanted pets that come through their doors. Jenna Mullinax, a member of the CCAS team, taught the youth how to read a dog’s body language and safely interact with a shelter animal for the first time.

4-Hers and Volunteers at Cleveland County Animal Services.4-H members used their new knowledge to interact with several of the shelter’s dogs and gain their trust. Each youth made a Christmas wish list for the dog that they had spent the most time with and posed with that animal for a photo that was posted on social media to help promote the dog for adoption. The service project provided 4-H’ers with a meaningful hands-on educational experience and opened the door to future collaborations with Cleveland County Animal Services, including fostering and obedience training. Five dogs were adopted as a result of the project.
