Collapse ▲Our April 13th & 14th Livestock Clinic & Campout was a huge success!
It wouldn’t have been possible without the collaboration with Cleveland Community College who allowed us to use their Animal Science facility as our host sight, and a huge thank you to their their Animal Science program director, Courtney Happ.
Heather Schronce, our Field Crops Agent, did an amazing job working with the youth and their Dairy Steer calves. Due to her extensive personal experience she helped 4-H participants to prepare their steer calves for the upcoming Spring Show. This included a clinic on proper halter breaking skills, show ring etiquette, showmanship tips and tricks, as well as how to bathe and prepare the dairy steers for show day.
Lauren Greene, our area Specialized Poultry Agent, taught our 4-H “Chicks to Champs” participants how to properly handle their chickens and present them to a judge, and practiced bathing and cleaning to make them presentable for showmanship.
Our 4-H agent Carey Stewart and a 4-H parent with goat showing experience jumped in to work with youth and their goats.
While dinner was under way the amazing veterinarian Beverly Hargus, DVM owner of Animals -R- Us in Hendersonville, NC. Dr. Hargus Graduated from NC State University College of Veterinary Medicine in 2001. She received a Bachelor of Science from Mars Hill College with a double major in chemistry and math and a minor in biology. She has been practicing mixed animal veterinary medicine for 20 years. She generously donated her time and resources to vaccinate, tag, and castrate the animals.
Several brave souls toughed out the cold night weather and camped out at the facility, waking up to a pancake and egg breakfast.
Later in the day Courtney Happ, Animal Science program Director at Cleveland Community College, spoke with the group about the Animal Science program offered at CCC and all the careers someone can go into with an associate in Animal Science.
Thank you to all of the parents that brought their 4-H members out, along with their animals so that they could gain new skill sets, make friendships with like minded youth, and better their relationship with their animals.
Thanks also to everyone that pitched in with food, supplies, helping to set up and take down, cleaning up, and leaving the facility in the best shape to insure we can use it again in the future.
