This workshop is part of the Empowering Mountain Food Systems educational series and is made available by N.C. Cooperative Extension and the Cleveland Community College Small Business Center.

A group tours a processing room.Join NC State Extension as they talk through agritourism on your farm. We’ll kick things off with an introduction to agritourism and assess if it is right for your farm business. Then we’ll move into more specifics on developing and sustaining a business concept, identifying business resources, and understanding how to launch and grow your business through customer experiences and marketing.

A group of tourists test out shelling corn by hand. There will be a farm visit to Willis Farms in Belwood. This farm grows a variety of crops, making and selling corn meal, grits, and sorghum syrup (often referred to as “molasses”). We will learn about how this working farm has added agritourism to their operations, increasing sales, and educating the consumer about traditional sorghum syrup and heirloom corn production. You can also visit the 1800s homestead on their property and see a 1935 cottage farmhouse that serves as an Airbnb and stays booked year round.

The event will begin at 1:30 p.m. at the Advanced Technology Center on the campus of Cleveland Community College, 137 S. Post Road, Shelby, NC, and move to the farm visit by 4:00 p.m.
