N.C. Cooperative Extension is working to fill two positions, a Nutrition Program Assistant (funded in partnership with Healthy Together Cleveland) and a Commercial Horticulture Agent (formerly occupied by Daniel Shires, who retired August 1).

A $5,000 Innovation Grant from NC State University will finance new incubators and other equipment to enhance and expand the 4-H Classroom Embryology Project in second grade classrooms county-wide.

The annual Southwest Piedmont Corn & Soybean Field Day to be held at ASR Grain Company on August 10 will introduce row croppers from Cleveland and surrounding counties to the latest research findings and best management practices for corn, soybeans, and small grains.

The Kings Mountain Farmers Market is thriving during its second season of operation, attracting 300+ customers every Saturday morning and is projected to generate more than $50k in sales for local farmers by the end of the season. A peak season market is operating successfully at the Atrium Cleveland hospital in Shelby on Tuesdays (10 a.m. – 1 p.m.) through the end of August.

A new round of Extension Master Gardener training began August 1 with 14 students enrolling. Cleveland County’s Extension Master Gardener Program engages 49 volunteers in community education, beautification and gardening projects. So far this year, volunteers have reported 1,355 face-to-face teaching contacts and 2,096 volunteer hours valued at $49,989.60.

Six Cleveland County ECA members attended the 2024 NCECA State Conference and the National Volunteer Outreach Network Conference on July 15-18 in Asheville. Cleveland County ECA was awarded the Gold Award of Excellence for their many hours of volunteer service in 2023.
