The Cleveland County 4-H Youth Development Program is preparing to kick off its second annual Chicks to Champs Project, with a registration deadline of Friday, October 4.

ABOUT THE PROJECT

Chicks to Champs teaches youth ages 5 to 18 how to successfully raise backyard laying chickens. Each participant receives five newly hatched chicks and cares for them through maturity over the course of a year.

Participants must attend two mandatory workshops prior to getting their birds. Both workshops will be held at Cleveland County Farm Bureau, 1503 W Dixon Blvd, Shelby, NC 28152.

  • Monday, October 7 from 6-7:30 p.m.
    Learn how to provide proper care for young brooding chicks and receive your start-up supplies.
  • Monday, October 14 from 6-7:30 p.m.
    Learn what to expect as your birds get older and how to provide proper nutrition, management, and housing.

Chicks will be available for pick-up at the County Extension Center, located at 130 S. Post Road, Suite 1, Shelby, NC 28152 from 10 a.m. until 5 p.m. on Friday, October 18.

A third hands-on workshop later in the year will teach participants how to prepare themselves and their birds for fun & exciting poultry shows where they will compete for prizes.

REGISTRATION

The project is available to the first 30 youth who register and attend the first mandatory meeting. Register using the following Google form

COST & PAYMENT

Pay by cash or check at the first workshop on October 7. Cost is $50 for the first child and $40 for each additional sibling.
