Foothills Farmers' MarketCleveland County residents want access to fresh, local food and market growers need access to viable direct-to-consumer retail outlets. Over the past 15 years, Foothills Farmers’ Market has become firmly established as a cornerstone of the local food system. N.C. Cooperative Extension has continued to support Foothills Farmers’ Market since its inception in 2010, Over time, the market has demonstrated economic, health and social benefits to the local community. Based on market data, Foothills Farmers’ Market developed at 2024 Impact Report highlighting these benefits:

  • More than 50 vendors sold regularly at the year-round market. These included 20 produce growers, 12 meat, egg & cheese producers, 10 value-added food manufacturers, and 10 highly skilled artisans.
  • Annual sales exceeded $250,000, helping to grow the local economy and sustain local farms and small businesses.
  • Over 90,000 customers shopped at the market throughout the year.
  • Local sponsors supported market operations by providing more than $20,000 in financial support.
  • Low-income shoppers made $6,100 in qualified SNAP/EBT food purchases and received $1,900 in cash shopping incentives.
  • Low-income seniors redeemed $7,600 in market vouchers.
  • Vendors and shoppers donated food values at more than $2,000 to an organization working to fight hunger and food insecurity in the local community.
  • Seventy (70) local musicians were showcased on market days during the year, earning a combined $3,650.
  • The market partnered with Shelby VFW to operationalize a shared commercial kitchen that is being used by 5 value added food producers.
