Collapse ▲Pat Farley, now 83, was first introduced to 4-H at Polkville School where she graduated in 1959. Mr. Henry Dameron was the 4-H agent at that time. During the 4-H meetings in the school auditorium, girls sat on one side of the aisle and boys sat on the other, each receiving different instructions. Because girls couldn’t participate in farming projects back then, Pat focused her energies on mastering the arts of sewing and cooking.
As a young teenager Pat attended Camp Millstone. Her clothing construction project won first place in the state, qualifying her to attend NC 4-H Club Week in Raleigh. Pat still has the pin that she was awarded for winning the 4-H Dress Review.
For years, Pat has devoted her time and energy to serving others. As a retired nurse she serves as a first responder with the United Methodist Committee on Relief, regularly traveling across the United States and to other countries to provide human aid in response to natural disasters. Pat regularly cares for her friends & neighbors, assists with the distribution of commodity foods, volunteers at soup kitchens, and makes the best apple butter and pies you’ll ever taste!
Pat has given back to Cleveland County’s 4-H youth development program by teaching youth how to cook and eat well, judging their presentations, and helping to establish new community clubs.
A frequent visitor to the Extension Center, Pat helps prepare meals for county commissioners and plans demonstrations for kids at the local farmers’ market. She serves as County Council President for Cleveland County Extension & Community Association (ECA), providing vision and leadership to an organization with a magnificent record of accomplishments and service to the local community.
Pat was recently recognized as a distinguished “Forever 4-H’er” at the Cleveland County 4-H Awards Program held December 16, 2024… an honor well-deserved.
