Cleveland County Extension & Community Association (ECA) and Extension Master Gardner (EMG) volunteers do a lot of work behind the scenes to keep the local Seed Library project up and running. Administered by the Cleveland County Library System, the Seed Library makes free vegetable seeds available for library patrons to take home and plant, making home gardening and healthy eating an easy choice for local residents.
ECA and EMG volunteers serve alongside Cooperative Extension and library staff on the Seed Library Committee, submitting grants requests for seeds, supplies, and gardening books to NC Steps to Health. They also help package seeds, stock gardening guides, and promote and teach gardening workshops to help Seed Library patrons learn about growing fruits and vegetables at home.
A family in the Kingstown community are ready to return books and check out new books and seeds.
In addition to the main county library in Shelby and the Spangler Branch Library in Lawndale, the Seed Library is now available through the new bookmobile, and outreach staff say that the seed carts are extremely popular…especially at this time of year as gardening season approaches. Individuals can look for the bookmobile at the regular twice monthly stops throughout the county.
