Nancy Hairston Abasiekong, who retired from N.C. Cooperative Extension in May 2025, was recognized as an “Unsung Hero” by the Cleveland County Business Development Center during Minority Enterprise Development Week. Nancy received the honor at an Awards Gala held at the The LeGrand Center in Shelby on Thursday, October 23. The event spotlighted those community & business leaders who go beyond simply “punching the clock” or “showing up.” These are the individuals who devote their creativity, energy, and professional expertise to solving problems, uplifting others, and strengthening the fabric of our community.

Throughout her 48 years of service to Cleveland County as an Extension Family & Consumer Sciences Agent, Nancy worked tirelessly to improve quality of life for local  individuals & families. She empowered people by sharing research-based information, teaching practical life skills, and providing guidance & encouragement for them improve their well-being by making informed decision in the areas of nutrition, health, food safety, financial management, effective parenting, healthy home environments, aging, and kinship care. During her distinguished career, Nancy also championed community development by helping people discover opportunities for community engagement, making their individual & collective voices heard, building collaboration, and growing & exercising their personal leadership skills.

Attending the Gala to show their support & appreciation were family & friends, co-workers, community partners, and Extension volunteers.
