This workshop is part of the Empowering Mountain Food Systems (EMFS) Agribusiness Series. The EMFS project (which includes Cleveland County) is working to expand opportunities and capacity for food & farm businesses across the western NC region.

Duncan Blount prepares locally-grown peppers for a batch of one of his Shelby Spice hot sauces.

Adding value to agricultural products is a worthwhile endeavor because of the higher returns that come with the investment, the opportunity to open new markets and extend the marketing season, and create new recognition for the farm.

This segment of the EMFS agribusiness education series will cover retail firms, low and high-risk value-added foods, commercial facilities, shared-use facilities, and home processing. Topics include regulations and requirements for low-risk foods, specialized and advanced high risk food manufacturing, supplements, and the latest on CBD.

Presenter Susan Parrish with the NC Department of Agriculture & Consumer Services has been working in the regulatory space for 20 years, helping food businesses stay abreast of regulations and best practices for manufacturing quality value-added food products.

For local food producers: The Cleveland Community College Small Business Center and N.C. Cooperative Extension are partnering to make this training available online via Zoom to local producers.

PRE-REGISTRATION IS REQUIRED. THERE IS NO FEE. Visit the Cleveland Community College Small Business Center’s Events/Workshops Page to pre-register.
